Hunting Webhancer

permalink
Webhancer is a web site performance analysis program that may be installed on your computer without your knowledge. I found webhancer installed on my system unbeknownst to me. As a consumer this incensed me as it was installed subversively and alters my windows network stack. I'm sure this doesn't improve performance either and appears to cause additional problems.

I initially went looking for background programs that might be causing network related problems I had observed. Every time I launched RealOne Player from Mozilla it would freeze for several minutes before playing the audio. Now that webhancer is removed it seems this problem is also gone. If I notice the problem again and Webhancer has not re-installed itself I will publish a retraction.

I'm not sure which programs are shipping with and installing Webhancer. Refer to Webhancer Spyware to detect and remove it.

New virus spreading today. Windows only as usual spreading through email. Symantec has the info on the virus here. McAfee doesn't yet have it up on their new virus page yet.
McAfee's List of Virus Hoaxes

Join the Crew, Elfbowl, Lump of Coal and more are all examples of virus hoaxes. Please, please, please before forwarding another "This is a virus warning and it's for real cause my friend got it from a VERY reliable source..." email, check with the McAfee List of Virus Hoaxes. There has never been a case of an authentic virus being reported via email. Chances are any warnings you received that don't point directly to a reputable web page detailing the virus and solutions are a fake.
McAfee Virus Scan

My choice for a good Windows virus scanner. McAfee has the ability to run in the background, check email, downloads and run a full scan through a scheduling system. The software also has an upgrade button to check if you have the latest virus definitions and will guide you through downloading and updating your list. Make sure when you install it to choose Custom Install and install the portion that scans email and web downloads.

If you've been hit by the "I Love You" macro virus, the site, "the pope" has information on protecting yourself from VBS (Visual Basic Script) attachments.

New More Destructive Love Letter Macro Virus Alert!

McAfee is issuing a new virus alert on a variant of the "I Love You" macro virus. Apparently this one will attempt to erase all files not in use. Which means you could lose almost all the contents on your hard drive. Now would be a good time to update virus definitions or simply stop using Outlook.

Email Viruses

Some email programs, alright, Outlook, have the ability to execute attached scripting code. This is not to be confused with standard attachments which are files that the user must voluntarily execute. This scripting code, known as Visual Basic if used properly can help users of Microsoft Outlook attach programs to email that can interface with other Microsoft products such as databases, spreadsheets, etc. However Visual Basic is powerful enough to do some damage to your computer as well, although most "email viruses" thankfully only send out copies of themselves to every person in your mailbox. Embarrassing yes, but at least you didn't loose your documents. This time.

The following links from Microsoft are for patches relating to each of the various versions of Outlook. These in conjunction with a virus scanner that checks incoming email should keep your machine as virus free as possible.

As I mentioned, these are not the same as file attachments. You should also install one of the above virus scanners to ensure that any file you receive through email or download and run is scanned.
